Ever seen a cuter sweet potato than this little baby in a homemade five minute sweet potato costume? I didn’t think so.
Sweet Potato Costume
I love a quick and easy costume especially a wearable costume that will get more use than just on Halloween. This sweet potato costume was a total fluke. I actually put this together one Thanksgiving while waiting for my family’s favorite turkey recipe to finish cooking.
Baby Teddy was wearing his festive orange for our Thanksgiving feast and while I was making my favorite sweet potato recipe I thought it would be hilarious to turn my baby into a tasty Thanksgiving side dish, only second to my secret ingredient green bean casserole!
What We Love about this Sweet Potato Costume
I think it turned out so stinking cute. There are a lot of things we love about this darling sweet potato costume idea aside from how delectable the wearer will look!
Making this costume is perfect even for the over tired mama out there. It is low energy to make with easy to get and inexpensive supplies.
Also the baby sweet potato costume is comfortable costume for the baby who is wearing it! I love love love costumes that use regular clothing that can be worn again over and over. No need to invest in something for one time use.
As a bonus this tutorial is easy to adapt for any size. While I don’t know if there’s anything cuter than a baby sweet potato you could really do the whole outfit in any size. Grandpa could be a sweet potato too if you grab him some orange sweats!

What You Need to Make a Sweet Potato Costume
As long as you have orange base pieces you should be good to go. If you need some here are some good options.
If you need your orange base here are some good options.
- Orange beanie style hat
- Orange baby onesie
- Orange child sweat suit
- Orange teen and adult sweat suit
- Orange teen and adult sweat suit with hood
If you go the sweat suit way you could put the marshmallows right on the hood or just make a separate hat so you can reuse the sweatshirt. Another option would be to cut the hood off the sweatshirt and then you’ll have two pieces.
Once you have your base all you have to do is marshmallow up that headpiece.
Supplies for Making Sweet Potato Hat
I used a glue gun for this and it worked so so well! You could use some other glue but with how quickly the glue gun glue dries and holds really well. With another type of glue you may have to hold it in place while it settles into place.
- Glue gun – this is my very favorite glue gun it works so well and it’s cordless!
- Glue gun glue
- Orange hat
- Marshmallows – I like the big ones but really any style of marshmallow could work
How to Make a Marshmallow Sweet Potato Hat
To make this cute costume it is so stinking easy. Just get or make yourself a basic hat. Bonus points if it is orange, but really orange-ish will do.
I happened to have this orange beanie on hand but you can buy an orange hat here for cheap. I used an adult sized beanie I had on hand already and it worked great on 7 month old Teddy.
Next all you do is hot glue some real marshmallows onto the hat. Of course this is not going to last forever but hey if you want to reuse it, just pull off the dried up marshmallows and glue on some more. Super inexpensive but also hilarious costume idea perfect for your favorite sweet potato!
It really is just that simple. Just put glue on the hat and attach marshmallows.
