Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients
Sentence about ingredients
- Cream Cheese – 8 oz (one brick)
- Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt – 16 oz. I always use greek yogurt for health purposes but sour cream works great too
- Chicken – 10 to 16 ounces cooked and chopped.
- Franks Red Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce – 1/2 C works great for me if you want more of a kick you can add more. I think 1/2 is good if you want great flavor and a touch of spice that most party guests will love.
- Cheddar Cheese – 1 C shredded cheese
- Blue Cheese Crumbles – 1/2 C if you are aren’t a blue cheese person you can just add more shredded cheese.
- Garlic – 1 TBS chopped, I just use the pre-chopped stuff I keep in the fridge at all times.
- Green Onions – optional if you want for garnish and freshness
My favorite way to make this is to whip it up in a small 2 quart sized crock pot but you can definitely make it in a larger one with no necessary adjustments.
You could also put it together in the instant pot, oven or stove though. It’s flexible and an easy appetizer whatever way you make it.
Substitutions and Modifications
Blue Cheese – If you hate blue cheese just swap it for another cheese that you like!
Ranch – If you have some ranch on hand (powdered or bottled) you can add a heaping teaspoon or two for a creamy ranch flavor. This is is good if you are leaving the blue cheese out. I would start with 1 tsp and see what you think.
Crock Pot Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe
It is so easy to make slow cooker buffalo chicken dip. You pretty much just dump everything in and the crock pot do it’s thing.
- Prep the chicken. I usually use cooked rotisserie chicken for this recipe but if you are starting with raw chicken season it with salt and pepper and cook it on the stove with some spray oil. Chop into small pieces. I personally prefer chopped chicken in dips but you can shred if you like that texture.
- Add all the ingredients. Add the ingredients into the crock pot.
- Cook. Turn the slow cooker on high and cook for about 30 minutes and then stir. Cook more until your desired texture is reached and then set on warm to serve. It usually takes 1-2 hours on high for me. Make sure to check and stir every 30 minutes though.
- Serve. Serve with tortilla chips, carrots, celery, or any other dipping agent you like. Make sure to try some of my leftover ideas below if you don’t end up gobbling it all up!
This makes about 2 quarts of dip.
Can You Make Chicken Dip Without a Slow Cooker?
Absolutely! I love buffalo chicken dip in the crock pot but if your small crock pot is full of another yummy dip or you just want to make it ahead and will need to reheat it there are lots of ways to make this.
Instant Pot Buffalo Chicken Dip
Use an electric pressure cooker like an Instant Pot. This is particularly good if you are starting off with raw chicken. Just put everything except the shredded cheese, blue cheese and onions in and cook on high for 15 minutes.
Stick forks in to shred or kitchen scissors to chop and add the shredded cheese and blue cheese and stir until melted. If you are using precooked chicken just stick it all in close the lid and and cook on high for 5 minutes with a natural release. Mix it all up and serve.
Stove or Oven Buffalo Chicken Dip
This is a great method if you want to make this ahead. If your cream cheese is already room temperature you can mix everything in a bowl. 30 minutes before you are you are ready to serve the buffalo chicken dip put it into an oven safe dish at 350 F. If you are cooking it from the refrigerator it may take a little longer..
Alternatively dump it into a pot and heat it on the stove until it’s all melty and gooey, about 10 minutes. Scoop into a serving dish. You could even use one of those tea light fondue pots to keep it warm.
How to Reheat Buffalo Chicken Dip
How ever you decide to make the dip I prefer to reheat in the microwave. You can reheat the whole dish or just a portion in a glass bowl making sure to stir to get any hot/cold spots incorporated.
What to Do With Chicken Dip Leftovers
This reheats so well that you can and may be tempted just to much at it all week if you are lucky enough to have leftovers but it’s also fun to use this cheese flavorful chicken mixture as parts in the dishes.
Here are some of my favorite ideas.
- Buffalo Chicken Wontons or Eggrolls – just add a spoonful to egg noodle wrappers and fry or air fry!
- Buffalo Chicken Pizza – just make my favorite cheater pizza dough, form it and top with dip. So easy!
- Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Potatoes – Make baked potatoes and top with a heaping scoop of warmed up dip.
- Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese – Now I have a from scratch Buffalo Chicken Macaroni and Cheese recipe that is SO good but if you have 1/2-1C of dip left you can just make my regular Mac and cheese and stir the leftover dip in.
