One of the best things about this simple mermaid craft is that you’ll have cute mermaid accessories in no time. It’s simple enough that it would make a fun mermaid kid’s craft. You could even make them to give as gifts.
Whether you like more flamboyant or more simple hair decor you can easily change it up to suit your tastes. Want it big? Use a big shell or a bunch of shells together. Making it for a little one or want just a little accent? Well small shells work great for a subtle mermaidy pop!

Mermaid Hair Clip Supplies
You may even have everything you need to make these cute shell hair clips at home. But if you don’t I’m linking where to get some on Amazon.
- Shells. I bought a bag of shells to use as party decorations and just used a few of those. But if you have shells from a beach trip you can definitely use those.
- Bobby Pin or Clip. I used basic bobby pins since they are easy and inexpensive. If you have thicker hair you can use what ever kind of hair clip you prefer.
- Glue. A hot glue gun will work for most shells and clips. If you are having trouble getting that to hold you can try E600.
- Felt (optional). When I first made these shell clips I did not use felt but I will talk you through how to use felt to get a better hold on your clip. This is helpful for curvy shells or stubborn clips.
How to Make Shell Clips and Hair Accessories
There are two ways you can make these hair clips. The first is super simple the second really has one extra step but it’s just as easy just a little bit more secure.
- Put glue on the shell. Turn the shell over to find where you want to affix the hair clip. Keep in mind you want it flattish so it can sit in the hair nicely. If you don’t have a good flatter surface I suggest using my felt trick. I’ll talk about below
- Position the hair clip. Position the hair clip on the glue and hold it in place until the glue is dry. Remember that the the bumpy parts of bobby pins are meant to be pointed downward.
- Enjoy. It really is that easy!
If you need a little more security or surface area for your hair pin to stick to the shell you’ll want to pull out some felt. Just a small scrap will do the trick.
Felt Hair Clip Trick
This is great for when you want to stick a shell with a rounded bottom or concave curve to it. This allows more glue to stick so your shell is less likely to pop off when you’re trying to position the clip in your hair.
What you want to do is cut a small piece of felt out. It needs to be small enough that when glued to the underside of the shell it will not show. The joy of the felt is that you can use multiple pieces or curve it how you like. It is flexible so it can hug around rounded shells!
First start by sliding the felt onto the hair clip. For a bobby pin you want to place it in-between the long parts so where your hair will go. Then on the side of the felt that is facing the top (the part of the hair clip AWAY from the hair when wearing it, the picture shows it wrong oops) you will put your glue. Next place the glue covered felt on the underside of the shell and hold it there until it dries.
So fun right!? If you want to see more awesome projects my friends and I joined up to share a ton of ocean crafts.
