(ignore my reflection in the window I was too lazy to walk downstairs and take the picture)
First the question. Should I just wait for the next rain and dig up the dandelions? In a moment of denial I had the music maker dump the grass clippings all over the dandelions but they are breaking through. That’s the spot that I want to put the watermelons and pumpkins. So is it an option to use some kind of weed killer or do I really have to dig more. Seriously I dug out all the dandelions from the big patch there were like one every foot but the edge just seems too overwhelming to me.
Here’s how I think I may lay out the space. Let me know if you see any potential problems, suggestions to tweak things, or have any knowledge or tips about the dandelions. B’s are beans and peas, T’s are tomatoes, P’s are peppers, S’s are squash.

There’s weed killer specifically for dandelions. That’s what I think we’ll be relying on this year. It doesn’t kill the grass, so I think your garden should be ok.

Heidi is referring to an Ortho product, but I’m not sure if I’m happy with it. I used it on Saturday, and I can’t see any results yet. On the other hand, I used RoundUp on our thistles and they’re already turning brown and shriveling up. I was reading the RoundUp bottle and they recommend using it to clear garden plots. You just spray it on everything growing where you want to plant the garden, and it kills it all, you dig it up, and you’re good to plant your veggies etc 3 days later. We didn’t use any chemical control when we cleared out our garden plot last year, and this year, I wish we had since it’s already overgrown again. Just be careful to only spray what you want to kill, because it’s pretty wicked stuff.

We just learned about this interactive garden planner at growveg.com I haven’t looked at it yet, but apparently it will tell you which fruits and vegetables thrive together so that you can plant them together. It could be interesting.
As for the dandelions, I always have my toddler pick the “yellow flowers” so that they don’t go to seed and spread more cuz I’m too lazy to dig them up. Just make sure to toss them in the garbage cuz they will still seed if you leave them in the grass. Good luck!

‘J’ is for my jealousy at all those T’s and B’s that will be growing in your garden. I want a garden!
good luck and happy planting!

I don’t have time to read all the comments but please don’t use weed killer. All pesticides are just really bad for the environment no matter how much or how little of them you use.
If you are planting squash and pumpkins and stuff over there, just mow them before they get the puffy seed heads and keep an eye on them from now on.
Our pumpkin vines grew maybe 10 – 14 feet last year so keep that in mind. You might only want one pumpkin plant for 2 – 3 pumpkins. Those type of vine plants can live among the dandelions just fine. They are pretty tough as long as you keep the base of the plant weed-free until their leaves get big enough to block out the sun and kill them naturally.

Thanks guys for all the tips.
Beth I think I will just mow over it. I don’t really have time to dig.
Ruth glad you mentioned I should pick em up before they seed I wouldn’t have even thought about that.
