What is key lime pie? If you’ve never had this classic lime pie it’s a creamy custard that is sweet and tart at the same time. It has a strong lime flavor and it sits on a sweet graham cracker crust.

This is one of Teddy’s favorite desserts. It used to be his go to for ordering at restaurants but now he loves making it even more. It’s so easy that yes even a 6 year old can pull it off!

Key Lime Pie Ingredients
The best thing about this tasty dessert is that it is easy to have the ingredients for this on hand.
- Key Lime Juice – I use this Key West lime juice. They carry it at my local grocery store by the juice (it’s not refrigerated at the store).
- Greek Yogurt – I have used both 0% fat and 2% fat and it works great.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – You’ll want about 3 cups which is about 2 of the 14 oz cans.
- Lime – you will be using the zest of half the lime and the other half of the lime you’ll cut into wedges for cuteness!
- Graham Cracker Crust – I love this kind that I find at target but you can certainly use a homemade graham cracker crust similar. I use the 10 inch crust but if all you can find is a 9 inch that should work too. You’ll just have a deeper pie.
- Whipped Cream (optional) – I just use the spray can Reddi Whip stuff and it works great but if you want to make homemade whipped cream that would be delicious.
If you’re using a premed crust like I usually do the only toll I would recommend is a good quality citrus zester. It makes the job so much easier!
When making my own graham cracker crust I use the same technique for making the graham cracker base of my white chocolate blueberry cheesecake recipe.
If you’re making your own crust make sure to have a good pie pan. I grew up with tin ones but I love these glass pie pans!
For making homemade whipped cream I use this easy recipe but the spray stuff works great and makes for way less clean up!
Sour Cream Key Lime Pie
Can you use sour cream instead of greek yogurt for your lime pie? Absolutely! I just always have greek yogurt on hand and I love the extra protein I get so that’s what I use.
But if you prefer sour cream that would definitely work.
How to Make Key Lime Pie
This easy key lime pie recipe is great for making when you want something delicious with almost zero work. It’s so easy you can even make a non-cooking spouse or kid be in charge ;)
- Pour key lime juice. Use a bowl big enough to hold all the ingredients and start by pouring in the key west lime juice.
- Add yogurt. Next add the yogurt
- Add the sweetened condensed milk. Pour in all the sweetened condensed milk.
- Zest half a lime. Zest half a lime and add that into the bowl. Put the lime back in the refrigerator as you will use it when you serve the pie. This is my favorite zester, it works so well!
- Mix well. Mix all the key lime pie filling ingredients together. I just use a spatula. No need to dirty anything else!
- Pour into crust. Once your filling is smooth and well combined, pour it all into your graham cracker crust.
- Bake. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes. You should see small bubbles start to pop on the pie surface.
- Allow to cool. Let the pie cool at room temperature.
- Chill. Put in the refrigerator to chill over night or for at least 5 hours. I always cover with a layer of plastic wrap.
- Serve. Add a dollop of whipped cream and cut a small wedge of your reserved lime for each slice.
How Long Does Key Lime Pie Last?
This easy key lime pie recipe will last for 3-5 days. It’s delicious and keeps for a bit but I have noticed that the consistency starts to change around day 5.

Frozen Key Lime Pie
Can you freeze your key lime pie? Yes you can absolutely freeze your pie. You can freeze it whole or put a portion in the freezer.
Bake your lime pie like normal and allow to cool completely. Place in a freezer friendly container and stick in the freezer. When you are ready to eat it just put it in the refrigerator to thaw before you eat it.
