Substitutions and Modifications
Use what your family likes! If you’re not chocolate people swap out for flavors you like. If you’re gluten free or vegan or have any other dietary restrictions you can easily swap for what suits you and your guests best. You can even make a from scratch recipe or give it a healthier swap by making my chocolate peanut butter zucchini bread as the cake layer.
Colors can also change as you wish. Or swap out colors to match your parties theme!
If you don’t feel like making pudding you can just use canned frosting or whipped cream for and easy swap.
How to Make Cauldron Cakes
It is easy to make cauldron cakes.
- Prep oven. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Line cupcake pan. Place 24 cupcake liners in you cupcake pans.
- Make batter. In a medium mixing bowl combine your cake mix, water, oil and eggs. Stir until well combined. Pour the cake batter into the baking dish.
- Bake cake layer. Bake the cupcakes for 15-20 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Cool cakes. Set the cupcake aside to cool. Once cool remove them from their liners.
- Make the base layer. Put a cupcake into each cauldron, you will have to squish them down into the cauldrons and make sure you leave a little room for the pudding.
- Make Pudding. In a medium bowl combine the instant pudding and milk. Whisk until smooth. Add a few drops of neon green food coloring and stir together until desired green shade.
- Make the second layer. Top off each cauldron with a spoonful of pudding, careful not to overfill.
- Make Rice Krispies. In a large pot melt your butter and marshmallows together. Stir in a few drops of green food coloring until you get the green color you like. Make it a little darker than you want because it will lighten when you add the rice krispies.
- Assemble the cauldron. Working quickly spoon rice krispies on top of each cauldron. If it drips down the side, that’s okay we are going for a bubbling cauldron look. Top with sprinkles.
Cauldron Cake Variations
These are so versatile and customizable there are many ways you can change them up depending on how you’ll use them here are just a few fun ideas to get you started.
- Make them Hocus Pocus cauldron treats by sticking a pretzel stick in to look like a stirring spoon!
- I think it would be adorable to have different flavors with have different “potions name” signs as a part of a delicious Harry Potter Party.
What to Do With Leftovers Cauldron Cupcakes
These are best consumed close to when you assemble them. To save time prep the cake and pudding ahead of time and just assemble when you make the Rice Krispies treats.
If you do have any leftovers they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days but keep in mind with that pudding layer the texture will change a bit.
