What We Love This Harry Potter Spells List
When I was looking through all the Harry Potter spells I knew I wanted to create a list of Harry Potter spells that was good selection that would be fun for every day use but also for play duels and batters. I also wanted to keep it to one page. Something the kids could run around with in their hands or that could be used as a cheat sheet.
You have all the basics like the Harry Potter light spell – Lumos, the Harry Potter Levitation spell – Wingardium Leviosa, and of course the Unforgivable curses including the Harry Potter killing spell.
And if you don’t yet have your own wands I will show you how to turn regular pencils into a wand this is extra fun for back to school use!!

What You Need to Make Harry Potter Wand Pencils
While we usually play with our simple chopstick Harry Potter wands when we play, I thought I’d share how to make these fun pencils that look just like wands from Harry Potter. They make a really fun Harry Potter party favor.
- Pencils – just what ever kind of sharpenable pencil you prefer. These are my favorites
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun – I use a small low heat glue gun
- Paint – for this I like using acrylic paint and paint brushes but if you don’t care about preserving the functionality of the eraser you can definitely use spray paint.
It’s pretty simple to make basic pencil wands. You can make a bunch at once. Use them to treat a group or keep them on hand for gifting.
Customize Your Wand
Feel free to let your imagination guide you. This tutorial can be tweaked and adjusted in so many ways. You can swap the pencil out for your favorite pens. Or add some glitter before the paint dries. Put beads and gems on the glue for some texture. Really there are so many fun ways to make it your own.
In fact this could be a fun Harry Potter kid’s activity. Have everyone pick their supplies and make a wand. Depending on the kind of paint you use you could probably make a wand at the beginning of a party or get-together and have it ready to go home after a little play time!
How to Make Wand Pencils
It is easy to make wand pencils!
- Apply hot glue. Use the glue gun to add bumps of hot glue. If you want the eraser to be functional make sure to keep that clear. You can do lines or spirals down the pencil or just some blobs at the top. Just keep in mind that the further down the pencil the less pencil you’ll actually be able to use (hello sharpeners). If you want to add gems or beads make sure to do it while you glue as the glue hardens quickly.
- Paint. Pain however you wish. We love using paint brushes with acrylic paint, you can do multiple colors and even add glitter!
- Allow to dry. Set aside and allow to dry. We didn’t bother painting one side then the other we liked the varied colors and didn’t mind getting our fingers a little dirty but feel free to do it in shifts to get more coverage.
Practice Spells from Harry Potter
Now that you have your wands you can use my one sheet Harry Potter spell book if you will to have fun. Challenge your family members to duels. Request things with the Accio spell. Use Lumos, the light spell Harry Potter and his friend use to turn on the lights (you can even make your own light up wand for extra fun with the Harry Potter light spell).
Be careful because some of them are dangerous. I’m thinking about the fire spell Harry Potter and the Harry Potter death spells.
