How to Make a Face Mask from a Shirt
All you need is T-shirt you are willing to part with. Yes you’ll have to cut it to make this face mask.
No-Sew Face Mask Supplies
You’ll want to try to use a man’s shirt or unisex shirt. You want more coverage and the bulk of your mask will come from the sleeve.
- T-Shirt
- Scissors (I love these for sewing but any will work)
Making a Homemade Face Mask Out of a Shirt
While this is not the same level of protection as a surgical mask it is better than nothing when you have to head out. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and good a fit I was able to achieve with this method.
- Lay the shirt flat making sure to line up the seam that joins the bodice to the sleeve.
- Cut along the seam to remove the sleeve. Cut on the outside of the seam so that you leave any bulk from the shirt behind.
- Fold the sleeve so that the underside (many will have a seam) goes down the middle. Set aside
- Cut along the bottom edge of the shirt to make a long strip.
- Cut in half.
- Loop one pieces through each side of the sleeve piece you cut off.
- Tie to form ear loops. Or if you prefer you can tie them across the back of your head.
If you want to make two masks out of one shirt you can cut a second strip from the bottom of the shirt. Even without the hem it will do fine as ear loops or ties.

I’ve been saving T-shirts for onesies, caps, etc., but this facemask thing is a great use. I plan on putting in a microfiber towel as a filter inside this, but wow. You hit this one right out of the park. Thank you again for all you do.

Can you double up the mask, use two sleeves and put filter in between. I am Immunocompromised and need all the protection I can get! Thanks

I think this is a great option for when you are in a pinch but please do not give yourself a false sense of security. If you have to go out and have nothing else I think it would work but it would be hotter and harder to breath for sure. But I think you would want to try to sew one (see if a friend could sew one, buy a sewn one) or get an actual medical one if you are able to.
