This simple jewelry packaging tip is perfect if like me you love making handmade jewelry or finding awesome accessories on Etsy or at cute craft fairs.
These simple jewelry cards can easily be used for gift giving and make for the cutest presentation. Customize them for a variety of looks.
Jewelry Packaging
I’ve been using this method to give handmade necklaces, bracelets and earrings for years but the ones I’m showing today are from a little friend’s Harry Potter birthday gift.
I made her a little Gryffindor tie necklace (buy one here or learn to check out my Hogwarts house tie necklace tutorial here) and Teddy made her a homemade golden snitch bracelets and personalized wand. We packed it up with my printable Harry Potter Spell list but wanted a little more oomph and not just have the jewelry bobbing around in the box.
What We Love About Jewelry Cards
I love meaningful jewelry, whether it’s fingerprint hearts or photo pendants it’s easy to gift these precious handmade items in style.
The best part is that this quick and speedy packaging use simple supplies you probably already have on hand. You can use regular paper but I love using or something a little thicker. Since that leaves so many options you can let your creativity run wild.
This makes them fully customizable. Whether you’re giving a bookish trinket to your edgy friend or a touching kid made accessory to the grandmas you can make the cards fit and add an extra bit of flare.
They only take a small bit of paper so these make for a great recycling project. If you have a hard time getting rid of perfectly good craft supplies or even cards this is a fun quick project.

- Photo Necklace Pendant – these are so versatile use it to make a pendant out of any image, family, pet, even book!

- Fingerprint Necklace – these are darling as gifts for moms and grandmas but you can also use them for couples!
What You Need to Make Easy Jewelry Packaging
My favorite thing about this gift wrapping tip is that you should have all things on hand to whip one of these up quickly.
Supplies for Making Jewelry Cards
This is one of those projects that finds it’s beauty in it’s simplicity.
- Card Stock – Any sort of thicker paper or thin cuttable cardboard would do
- Scissors – extra details and affiliate links
- Tape – I like using washing tape
- Decorations (optional) – Marker or pen
- Paper Cutter (optional) – Most of the time I use scissors to shape the card but you could absolutely use a paper punch or a cutting machine like a Cricut.
- Straight Pin or Needle (optional) – this is helpful if gifting earrings.
Ideas for Jewelry Backers
One of the best things about this is that you can use pretty much any study paper. I always keep some white card stock on hand but it comes in lots of colors. One of my favorite parts is that you should be able to whip this up in a minute or two with stuff on hand.
If you do want to pick up something special for this you there are so many fun types of specialty papers. Just make sure you’ll be able to cut it with scissors and it will hold it’s shape. You can go for printed designs, velvet feel, glitter, or even a card with a design the recipient would like.
Another alternative for the more quirky could be to upcycle some packaging you have at home. I think cereal boxes or other food cartons could be a fun background especially when giving to teens.
How to Gift Wrap Jewelry
It is easy to wrap necklaces and other jewelry items so they make a big impact. I’ve often found that even a lovely or well made item can look kind of meh if it’s just in a small plastic pouch. With these jewelry cards you can take the presentation up a notch and not have to add too much extra trash or find just the right size box (like why are those things so expensive!?).
- Cut a thick piece of paper. Use scissors, a punch, or electric cutting machine to cut out a base shape.
- Decorate. Sometimes I add a little note, frame the image, but with time you could really make it fancy.
- Cut slits or holes. For necklaces and bracelets you’ll want to cut two slits. For earrings just stab two holes (you can use the earring itself of a sewing needle or straight pin).
- Attach jewelry. Slide your jewelry item in and position it how you like.
- Tidy the back. Fix the back by folding or rolling any extra length and securing with washing tape.
Cut Your Jewelry Backing
I love using a bit scalloped circle punch for small jewelry. It’s easy, sharp and quick. But I don’t know where I put mine lol (messy girl here) so I’ve been just cutting paper.
Instead of trying to make a perfect square, rectangle or other shape I just hand cut something that’s an off shape. Like a four sided shape but the top is slanted. If it’s purposely imperfect you don’t have to try to waste time making it just right.
Alternatively if you have an a cutting machine like a Cricut you can have it do the heavy lifting and cut any shape you like as your backing!
Decorate the Jewelry Card
Confession, I’m always always doing this at the last minute. If I wasn’t it would be fun to add some cute drawings, maybe even some water color, or glue on sequins.
But don’t underestimate the power of a simple black pen or sharpie. Draw a frame around the box, add a note (or not), and it just takes it up a little from a plan backing! You can even put an inside joke, loving reminder or something else that makes the gift more meaningful.
I have eave made the card extra big so that it could double as the gift card and wrote a full birthday or Mother’s Day note right on the backing!
One thing to keep in mind is the size of your item. Hold it up to your backing before you cut to see what shape and size makes the most sense.
Cut Slits and Poke Holes
Next you’re going to make the actual holder part of the card. For things like necklaces two slits work great for me. Sometimes I do them parallel and close sometimes wider and then other times I angle them in more like a V. They all work it’s just preference.
With earring I like to use a straight pin for sewing and put the paper on a soft surface like a folded towel or the arm of my work chair (I know I know). And just stab!
Secure the Back
This part is important don’t skip it. Take time to fold, or or tuck the back bits up and secure with a light washi tape. This makes it so you can place the card in a gift bag or box without it ripping or just all falling out. Make sure to use tape that isn’t too tacky that’s why I like using washi tape.
