What I’ve Been Reading: 88 Books and Counting

Do you guys make book reading goals? I might be just a teeny bit addicted to watching the number of books I read grow on my Goodreads reading goal. I’m at 88 books and half way through 2. I’m not sure if I’ll make my goal of 100 even with a bunch of audiobooks but I’m hoping to get close :) So here’s what I’ve been reading over the last month. Nothing bad this time around. I liked them all although admittedly some a more than the others.

Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger – I really liked this book. Think sassy girls, criminal boarding school, adventures, and steam punk goodness. When I first saw this book I absolutely fell in love with the cover but try as I might I could not get through the first chapter. I set it aside and after a few months I borrowed the audio version from the library. This time I was able to keep going. This doesn’t happen to me often where I have such different feelings about the paper book and the audiobook but I’m really glad I gave the audio version a chance because I would have been sad to miss out on this story. If you like the Flavia de Luce books give this a shot it’s even more fun! I’m excited to check out the rest of the series. See my full review.

Sensational Sequels

Game by Barry Lyga – I raved about I Hunt Killers in book 1 and book two is just as good and just as fun. Jasper continues on his hunt to help the cops solve serial murders but it gets even more complicated and crazy. But it makes for a fun exhilarating read everything fits together for one great story. If you haven’t started the series I definitely recommend it. If you liked book 1 I think  you’ll really enjoy book 2! See my full review.

Crown of Midnight by Sarah Maas – I’d like to shout from the roof tops “THIS IS HOW YOU DO A SECOND BOOK!” This was fantastic. Celaena the teen assassin continues her adventure. The characters you loved in the first book, Throne of Glass, get even better no really. I fell even more in love with Chaol and Dorian. The story gets complex in a totally fantastic way that is not confusing for a second. I just loved this. If you haven’t started this series I’m just going to say it, you’ve been missing out! Stand Alones

3:59 by Gretchen McNeil Ostrovski – If you like parallel worlds stories this is fun. It’s not my favorite alternate world book (that would be the fabulous Parallel) but it is fun. It starts like a contemporary but because crazy sci-fi with a parallel world and even scary creatures. There’s a lot going on in this book that at times feels like too much but the story is interesting and I’m glad I read it. See my full review.

Paradox of Vertical Flight by Emil  – It’s a pregnancy/ teen parent book from a male point of view. Intrigued? I was. When Jack finds out he’s a dad he goes to the hospital and kidnaps the baby who has already been signed away for adoption (with out his consent mind you). Jack is a self proclaimed philosopher who muses on life and the world this new baby has come into. As ex-philosophy professor I was both entertained and annoyed at Jack. He over thinks everything, he’s extremely judgmental, and he reminded me of too many boys I’ve know. The kind that get annoyed that they receive well wishes from people on facebook on their birthday because “it’s not genuine”. It’s a type of spoiled brat that is breed in the philosophy world. I think my problem is that he was TOO realistic. But even with my personality clash with the main character I am really glad I read this book. It wasn’t perfect but it was very different than anything I read. See my full review.

How to Love by Katie Cotugno – I picked this book up expecting a light chick flicky break from my fantasy and dystopian tales. But this is a very well done story of messy life, love, and making the best out of life. If you’re in the mood for a complex contemporary that touches on serious topics but doesn’t ever feel heavy I definitely recommend this. And if you can get a hold of the audiobook I highly recommend it. See my full review.
