Homemade Stat Trek uniforms? Yup I totally did it. You know my love for all things geeky and for making costumes, well I could not resist making these adult Star Trek costumes.
DIY Star Trek Uniforms
Any other Trekkies out there? I remember watching Next Generation with my family growing up. First crush you ask, totally Wesley Crusher I mean, it’s obvious right!? Could explain my love for that book. And the first thing I ever ever bought with MY OWN money yup it was this. You could say that making a Star Trek uniform or five was inevitable.
Yeah so we (Rotten Musicians) did a couple shows this weekend and one was sponsored by The Geek Show Podcast which to us means we need to totally geek out the set. I’m not sure why I thought this was a good idea but I thought it would be hysterical if we all showed up in Original star trek uniforms that I would just whip up.
Remember this is the same bunch that did the Dungeons and Dragons video. Yeah what was I thinking? I made them out of this thickish knit (it’s the only stuff in the right colors we could find) so it was little toasty to perform it but it should still really fun.
How to Make Star Trek Costumes
Thankfully the Star Trek uniform are basically regular clothes. For the ladies I used just a basic long sleeve knit dress pattern and the boys tops I used a simple V-neck long sleeve shirt pattern.
Supplies for DIY Star Trek Uniforms
If you are lucky and have time you can totally use blue red and yellow shirts and dresses as your bases. I did not find any and of course we left things to the last minute. But if you are comfortable sewing basics and have a serger these costumes can come together really easily.
Knit Fabric – you want the color you are using in addition to black
Sewing Pattern – I just grabbed patterns that were on sale but my tip would be something with very few pieces, no closures (so slips on over the head) and maybe something marked as 1-2 hour or easy! For the shirts I just used a basic V neck and then added a black faux collar.
Gold Rick Rack – I just used what I had on hand and it worked great.
Communicator badges – my friend made ours out of air dry clay, paint, pin backs and some glue but you can buy them too!
Black Bottoms – we did tights and knee highs for the girls and black pants for the guys, easy peasy.
How to Sew a Star Trek Dress Uniform
Basically you’re going to follow the instructions on your pattern but details you want to keep in mind is that for the female uniforms we will have a black band around the neckline and gold rick rack around the sleeves. Aside from that everything else is a basic dress. Usually you’ll sew shoulders of the bodice pieces together, put in the sleeves, sew the side seems, make and attach the skirt.
- Cut out the fabric and review the pattern. Make sure you keep in mind the direction of stretch when you are laying out your pattern pieces.
- Follow the dress pattern. Just start sewing the dress together according to the pattern directions while keeping the Star Trek details in mind. What you want to consider is when it comes to the neck area or the bottom of the sleeves would this it be better to do this step now or should I add in the detail (black collar or gold rick rack trim) now.
- Add a black collar. You can add the collar at the end just like you would do for binding. If you pattern doesn’t have binding on the collar just fold a 4 inch piece of black fabric in half lengthwise. Sew the short ends together. Next iron it in half you should have a skinny black circle (you’ll want the size to be about 70% the size of your neck opening and make sure you cut it out of stretchy fabric) Then attach the collar to the dress neckline by pinning the raw edges of the collar to the neck line. You’ll need to stretch it a bit to make it fit. This will help the neck hold its shape.
- Add gold rick rack. For the sleeve details you can sew the gold rick rack on before you close up the sleeves or just after. Be for is easier since it will be a flat piece but it’s not too bad just to sew it once the whole thing is done.
How to Make a Star Trek Uniform Shirt
The men start trek uniform is basically a colored V-neck shirt and black pants. The only other detail is that there is a black undershirt or something. To achieve this look I just made something like a thick black band or collar and sewed it to the inside of the shirts. Easy and doesn’t add a full layer of heat. Definitely something we wanted to avoid since we wanted to wear them to perform in and you get hot up on those stages.
- Cut out the fabric and review the pattern. Make sure you keep in mind the direction of stretch when you are laying out your pattern pieces.
- Follow the shirt pattern. Just start sewing the shirt together according to the pattern directions while keeping the Star Trek details in mind. What you want to consider is when it comes to the bottom of the sleeves would this it be better to do this step now or should I add in the detail (gold rick rack trim) now. The black neck detail we’ll just add in after the main colored shirt is constructed. Typically you’ll sew the bodice together at the shoulders, add the sleeves (now you can do the gold trip), sew the side seams and then finish the neck, wrists, and bottom of the shirts.
- Add gold rick rack. For the sleeve details you can sew the gold rick rack on before you close up the sleeves or just after. Be for is easier since it will be a flat piece but it’s not too bad just to sew it once the whole thing is done.
- Add a black under collar. Cut and fold a 6 inch piece of black fabric in half lengthwise. Sew the short ends together. Next iron it in half you should have a skinny black circle. Tuck it under and pin in place. You can either hand stitch it in a few places or stitch it down by flooring the collar stitch line. Just make sure that it will fit over a head.
So here’s the finished results. Pretty neat eh? I’m pretty proud of them although I was exhausted at the end of the week, you know late night sewing and then even later night shows but yeah I think they turned out pretty cool.
I kind of love my Star Trek costume. Anyone appreciate that I made my Star Trek uniform color red? Tell me you know what the Star Trek uniform colors mean!
