I feel like everywhere I turn lately I see maxi skirts. At the farmer’s market, on strangers at the Cheesecake Factory, on my friends, and even on celebrities. I love the trend. For one I’m all about comfortable cute clothes and maxi skirts are just that. Also maxi skirts look cute on all different body types, short, tall, tiny, poofy. But as much as I’ve admired the trend and even tried cute skirts on at the store I couldn’t bring myself to pay for one. For goodness sakes they are 2 seams and and waist band!
I am very excited to be joining in on Sew Country Chick Justine’s Sewing the Trends series since it gave me the push to finally draft a maxi skirt pattern and whip one up. So today I have a quick and easy maxi skirt tutorial to share. And let me say I’m addicted. These skirts are crazy easy fast to make too.
I started by borrowing one of my friend’s maxi skirts and I traced it on kiddo roll paper. I pinned along the edges then connected the dots and straightened them up with rulers.
If you don’t have a maxi skirt to take the pattern off of this is how my pattern turned out. It fits me great I wear a size M to L on most bottoms (usually L). You want to use very stretchy fabric so it will probably fit most small, medium, and larges or you could easily add or take away a few inches to adjust the size. I’m 5’5′ and this length is great for me.
- Once you have a pattern. Start by cutting out your fabric. When you cut out your fabric make sure that your pattern pieces are laying the correct direction with relation to the stretch of your fabric. I may have had to cut the waistband out twice because I wasn’t paying attention. Think of how it will stretch when it is on you. On my fancy drawing the pattern pieces should stretch left to right the way they are positioned. Cut 2 of each pieces on the fold
- With right sides together sew/serge the side seams of the skirt. With right sides together sew/serge the side of the band pieces together. You should have two tube-ish shapes (one for the band one for the skirt).
- Fold the band so the seams are on the inside. Pin to the INSIDE of the skirt raw edges together. Sew/serge around the top to attach the band to the skirt. Flip the band out over the right side of the skirt.
- Do a happy dance because you just made an awesome maxi skirt. Make 10 more!
Thanks so much to Justine for having me be a part of this fun series. Make sure to hop over to Sew Country Chick and check out the other awesome posts in these series.

Thank you for this tutorial! I pinned it. I don’t have many skirts (like two?) and this would be great for the occasional time when I need to wear a skirt. Perfect! I’m 5’5″ also, but I think I need to whittle down my waistline. lol

Looks great! So much easier just to make these instead of buying in the store. This way we get to choose our fabrics.

I love your easy tutorial and the skirts! I’m thinking I need to make another. I made this one about a year ago, but I’m digging your fabric choices. :)
